Scene from the game prototype

UNTITLED

A dystopian third-person adventure game set in a parallel future

Once upon a time

Once upon a time, there was a game engine called Unity (4). Although I used it to make video at that time, the idea and possibility of making a video game found room somewhere in the back in my head and decided to stay.

Making a video game does come with a steep learning however, hours need to be made in both modelling software and a game engine itself. Frustrating and fun at the same time, slowly but surely a whole lot of of ‘how can I’ turned into a first artistic/gameplay prototype.

Development

That first prototype not only came with a lot of knowledge and skills, but also insight into what the limiting factors of actual (independent) game development are. Time is definitely one of them, but constraints do provide clarity and scope (and dev builds).

So what‘s the story?

A small third-person puzzle and exploration-focused adventure game set in a parallel (and of course dystopian) future in what what once was known as the Netherlands. Leaning towards magical realism mixed with absurdism, humor and sarcasm, targeting consumerism and capitalism, referencing art, (Dutch) design, architecure, archeology, reality, and of course other video games. All of which on a 1:1 scale.

Think of something that touches on classic adventure games like Colossal Cave, Space Quest, Indiana Jones, Monkey Island and Full Throttle (to name a few), but also something that exists in between Kentucky Route Zero and a game like Tomb Raider.

To be continued.
