DE CHECKERS
Custom logo and lettering as part of identity design and toolkit
An accessible and relevant approach to mental health support
Over half of young people (between 16 and 25) in the Netherlands struggle with mental health issues, and more than 75% of those issues develop before the age of 25. Support figures (such as teachers, coaches, family members, or neighbours) can play a crucial role in recognizing issues early on.
De Checkers (those who check) is a free online tool developed by MIND Us that empowers support figures to learn and listen, ask the right questions, and offer help and support. Developed for and with young people, and in collaboration with organisations such as GGD Amsterdam and the Municipality of Utrecht, De Checkers offers an accessible and relevant approach to mental health support.
Multitude was asked to develop an identity for both the tool and campaign materials, with the requirement to stand on its own, but still (loosely) connect to MIND Us.
Identity design and flexible toolkit
The concept is based on the idea of signals: scanning, checking, recognizing, receiving, sending and forwarding. This idea was translated to a small but flexible design toolkit, consisting of a custom logo and lettering, an expanded color palette, combined with graphic elements and an emoji generator.
Connecting in terms of colour and drawing inspiration from the rough, brush/stencil like typeface used in the existing MIND Us identity, and the notion of something friendly yet tough, stencil lettering became the point of departure for the custom logo, and then expanded into a visual language connecting both shapes (the signals) and letterforms (the emoji). Lettering was used for initial campagin puposes, and them finally developed into a small custom font.
In collaboration with Aidan Wyber (concept and creative coding).
